Bahamian Archaeology

Bahamian Archaeology is the first book devoted entirely to the study of the earliest inhabitants of the Bahamian archipelago, which here includes the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Lucayans, as they were known, survived for only a few years after Spanish colonization of the Caribbean, and since then knowledge of them has been sparse, contradictory, and unsubstantiated.

In this thoroughly researched text, William Keegan traces the Lucayans from their roots in the islands to the south, and reconstructs their settlement of the Bahamas over several centuries. This unique view of Bahamian prehistory is a must-read for anyone interested in the early life of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and an excellent starting point for the continued archaeological study of the region.

William Keegan received his doctoral degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and is currently Curator of Anthropology, Florida Museum of Natural History. He has been investigating Caribbean prehistory since 1978, and has published several books and over 50 scientific articles.
