Identification Guide

Welcome to the Butterfly Rainforest Exhibit Identification Guide!

guide example

This guide, organized by color, contains photographs of the more than 150 Lepidoptera species displayed in the Florida Museum's Butterfly Rainforest exhibit since it opened in 2004.

Some species look completely different if viewed from the top or bottom sides of the wings and are included in more than one section, such as the Blue Morpho, found with both blue and brown butterflies (see image at right). Each species' range and wing size also is included, but this information is a rough generalization and not always completely accurate.

The Butterfly Rainforest exhibit houses between 60 and 80 species at any given time. Because some butterflies are seasonal, the species in the exhibit change throughout the year.

If you believe information in the guide is not accurate, or have a suggestion or question on butterfly identification, you are encouraged to post images and questions on the Florida Museum's Facebook page. Non-Facebook users may e-mail rfessenden@flmnh.ufl.edu.
