McGurn Speaker Series: Mission San Luis
Florida Museum classroom - 3215 Hull Road, SW 34th Street and Hull Road Gainesville, FL 32611 GET DIRECTIONS
Visitors may enjoy an engaging discussion titled, "Reconstructing a Spanish Mission: San Luis de Talimali" by Bonnie G. McEwan, Director of Research at Mission San Luis, Florida Department of State Division of Historical Resources.
In 1983, the State of Florida purchased San Luis, the western capital of Spanish Florida during the 17th century. Following years of intensive archaeological and historical research, the Division of Historical Resources embarked on an ambitious program of reconstructing the mission and developing a living history program. McEwan's talk will chronicle some of the highlights of translating their research for the public at San Luis, including some of the unexpected outcomes.
Admission is free and light refreshments will be served after the presentation in the museum’s Lucille T. Maloney Classroom in Powell Hall.
Made possible through a donation by Ken and Linda McGurn of Gainesville, the speaker series is designed to highlight ways scientists can better engage the public in research.
