An adult American crocodile, as seen from the front, displaying its relatively narrow and pointed snout. Crocodiles from further south in the species' distribution tends to have an even narrower snout (perhaps to enable a different prey niche to be exploited next to the broader-snouted caimans with which it shares its range). This animal was photographed in Florida, at the northernmost limit of its distribution. It is just possible to make out the bony median ridge which runs approximately halfway down the animal's upper jaw from the back of the head.
