Time Running Out

Indian gharial with long exposure

This month's picture was taken by Adam Britton, and features an Indian Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) at the Night Zoo in Singapore. I don't feature many of my own pictures these days, but this picture was taken at the start of my honeymoon with my wife Erin. This gharial was being quite photogenic, but there wasn't enough light to take a standard photograph. Instead I used a long shutter speed (5 seconds) to give me enough light for the picture, and also to create the impression that the waterfall behind the gharial was flowing like sand around the gharial's head. It came out quite effectively.

Unfortunately, time really is running out for the gharial. The successful conservation initiatives from the 70's and 80's have ceased, and throughout most of its range the gharial is quickly disappearing once more. Even its core populations are threatened. The new Gharial Multi-Task Force (GMTF) has been set up to get new gharial conservation measures into action, and fast. This website will focus on the GMTF once their website has been set up.
