SUPPORTING THE ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM OF THE FLMNH

The Environmental Archaeology Program (EAP) is a research and teaching laboratory devoted to the reconstruction of the ancient environments of the circum-Caribbean (including the South Eastern USA, Mesoamerica, and the Caribbean) and northern South America. Our aim is to understand the deep-time history of the relationship between humans and their environments particularly in these areas where today we are having such a deleterious impact on the environment in so many ways. Perhaps from the successes and failures of ancient environmental uses, we'll learn valuable lessons for future sustainable management.

We have a very active lab, with both research and teaching components but since the funding for the University and our Museum is now fairly limited, most of the money to support our research and education comes from contract investigations conducted for government and private organizations, research grants, and donations by generous individuals and corporations. The donations are particularly appreciated because they indicate the level of interest of the public and our community in our work.

The Environmental Archaeology Program is looking for funds to support:

  1. environmental archaeology research at archaeological sites throughout the Americas
  2. physical growth of our collections from a single field focus (zooarchaeology) to the more holistic three- field focus incorporating zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, and archaeopedology
  3. creation of a digital archive and research database of ancient environments and human-induced environmental change
  4. educational and public outreach via on-site and visiting collaboration and the development of digital curriculum aids

RECENT DONATIONS TO THE FLMNH ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM

Our program has been generously funded by many individuals and organizations. Our most recent and exciting funds were donated by the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation and include funds to create an endowment to support our educational and outreach activities. This endowment continues to grow with donations from other generous individuals. As well, FAO Schwarz has donated two research grants to support the creation of digital images of our collections. Finally, to further our move toward a digitally accessible collection, Dell Computers has donated a wireless enabled laptop.
