Fire Pit or Hearth
Fire Pit
Feature 3 is a fire pit (hearth) that has locked plant and animal remains in space and time. Chemical reactions occurring in the fire pit over the past 5000 years have turned this material to a soft stone. Arrow A shows a mystery snail (Viviparus georgianus ), arrow B shows a large piece of burnt wood, and C is the site of a freshwater catfish (Ictalurus sp.) skull. Go to our next image, which shows a modern catfish skull and the partially excavated zooarchaeological catfish skull.
