Whelk Shell Cooking Vessel

The lightning
whelk (Busycon sinistrum) would have been collected from coastal
waters. This specimen was used as a cooking vessel. The "bottom"
of the vessel is burned out and the external surface is fire clouded.
Cooking residue is present inside of the vessel. See our image showing
the external surface of the specimen.
