Fishery Restrictions in Place to Protect Right Whales
November 21, 2006

Release from:
NOAA

NOAA Fisheries has implemented temporary restrictions, consistent with the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan, that apply to lobster trap/pot and anchored gillnet fishermen in two separate areas east and south of Portland, ME. The first area totals approximately 1,549 nm\2\ (5,312 km\2\), and the second area totals approximately 1,809 nm\2\ (6,204 km\2\). The purpose of this action is to protect northern right whales that have been observed in these areas. Two aggregations of northern right whales, 4 whales, and 13 whales, respectively, were sighted in these areas on November 5, 2006. The restrictions are in effect through December 2, 2006.

These restrictions have been announced to state officials, fishermen, and other interested parties through e-mail, phone contact, and other appropriate media.

More information is available online, including nautical charts of the affected areas, or contact Diane.Borggaard@noaa.gov.
