Ucamara Project

Projecto Ucamara is an international collaboration involving principal scientists from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Spain, USA, and Venezuela. Together we propose a detailed inventory of the free living and ectoparasitic aquatic animals of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. The Pacaya Samiria Reserve is the largest contiguous area of protected várzea whitewater floodplain in the Neotropics (21,500 km2). As is the case with várzeas throughout South America, the aquatic fauna of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve is, as yet, uncatalogued. This project was initiated by invitations from the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (INRENA) and the Universidade Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana (UNAP), and is designed to match criteria described in the Master Plan for Conservation of Biological Diversity and Sustainable Development of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. For more information, see the project's web site: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/ucamara/
