Sea Turtle Conservation Measures Restored for Hawaii Longline Fishery

October 24, 2003
Release from:
NOAA

On October 6, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ordered the reinstatement of turtle conservation measures that had been vacated by an earlier court order. These regulations have been reinstated through April 1, 2004. Owners and operators of vessels registered with Hawaii longline limited access permits and Western Pacific longline general permits must comply with swordfish landing restrictions in waters north of the Equator. These conservation measures, including a prohibition against targeting swordfish, a limitation on landing or possessing more than 10 swordfish per trip, and gear restrictions, are necessary to protect endangered sea turtles. This temporary reinstatement of the regulations will allow NOAA Fisheries, the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council, the Hawaii Longline Association, conservation groups, and other interested parties to work cooperatively to address sea turtle bycatch issues in this fishery.
