Statistics on Unprovoked White Shark Attacks

For further information, see the Worldwide Shark Attack Summary and the Carcharodon carcharias species profile.

Unprovoked White Shark Attacks and Percent Fatal

1900-Present

This graph illustrates an overall increase in the numbers of reported white shark attacks over the last century. This apparent trend is a reflection of increased numbers of people utilizing the ocean, as well as enhanced media coverage over the last century. These data do NOT support an increase in the per capita attack rate by Carcharodon carcharias. Even though the number of white shark attacks has risen during this time period, the percentage of fatalities has decreased due to the establishment of better emergency medical services, more public knowledge of basic first aid and CPR, and increased education about shark attack. This trend is similar to that observed with all shark attacks. We do not have any confirmed white shark attacks reported in the 1940's.
