CITES Animals Committee Meeting
Last month the CITES Animals Committee met in South Africa in preparation for the Conference of the Parties later this year in Bangkok. Sarah Fowler represented the IUCN Shark Specialist Group, and other SSG members were present as members of other delegations.
Of particular interest:
Agenda Item 19. Biological and trade status of Sharks
In response to decisions from COP 12, the Animals Committee established a working group on sharks. The group reviewed documents on the possible expansion of the World Customs Organisation harmonised codes for shark products, but cautioned against too complex a system and noted the need to liaise with FAO. The group also reviewed progress with implementation of the FAO-IPOA Sharks and recommended that an update of this be submitted to COP 13. The group also highlighted the need for capacity building in developing countries and high seas fisheries in relation to implementation of the IPOA and noted FAO's capacity in this regard. As mandated by Resolution Conf. 12.6, the group prepared a provisional list of some key shark species (comprising 42 taxa) requiring special management attention from Parties.
