Summary Tables Of Chondrichthyans on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
Summary tables of chondrichthyans on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species are now available via the links below.
A total of 556 chondrichthyan species have been assessed on a global basis, plus a further 118 assessments at the regional/subpopulation level (note, 118 refers to the numbers of separate assessments, not the number of species. See notes accompanying tables 2.1 and 2.2). One-hundred-and-ten species (19.8%) are globally threatened (Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable), together with a further 54 subpopulations assessed as threatened at the regional level.
These tables were last updated 4 May 2005. Assessments are currently under review for >250 species for submission to the 2007 Red List. Updates to this information will be made available via the SSG website later in the year.
Table 1. IUCN Shark Specialist Group Red List assessments, 2000-2006.
This table provides a summary record of all Red List assessments for chondrichthyans up to 2006, including regional assessments carried out by regional Shark Specialist Group members. Complete rationales for assessments are provided.
Phylogeny and taxonomy follows: Compagno, L.J.V. Checklist of living Chondrichthyes. In: Fowler et al. (2005). Common names are those presented in the checklist, Last and Stevens (1994) or official FAO names, with the exception of some endemics where the most commonly referred to regional name is used.
Tables 2.1 and 2.2. IUCN Shark Specialist Group Red List Summary Tables, 2000-2006.
These two tables provide summary statistics for chondrichthyans on the Red List from 2000 to 2006 by major grouping (sharks, batoids and holocephalans) and by IUCN Category. Table 2.1 provides summaries for global assessments and Table 2.2 summaries for subpopulation and regional assessments.
