CSRP-Sponsored Training Workshop For West African Scientists Held in Sénégal October 2007
Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Sénégal
|
A training workshop (Le Séminaire de Formation des Enquêteurs des Pêches) for West African scientists focusing on elasmobranch identification, biological sampling, and conservation
was held at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Sénégal
on October 9-14, 2007.
The workshop was organized locally by Mika Diop (PSRA,CSRP), and led by three prominent elasmobranch scientists.
Bernard Séret (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, France) taught
participants about the identification of elasmobranch species found off the coast of West Africa;
Rui Coelho (Universidade do Algarve, Portugal) demonstrated
biological sampling techniques; and George Burgess (Florida Program For
Shark Research, University of Florida, U.S.A.) covered elasmobranch conservation and fishery management.

The goals of the workshop were to train West African biologists in chondrichthyan
(sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras) species identification and life history
(especially age determination and reproduction) methodologies, and to alert them
to their k-strategy life histories, globally threatened conservation status, and
the diminishing catches this group is experiencing worldwide.
This was the fourth such workshop held in West Africa in recent years,
the first being held in Nouadhibou, Mouritanie in December 2004 utilizing the same instructors, the second in Senegal in December 2005, and the third in Senegal in January 2007. Such training will lead to the acquisition of more refined fishery data which is so badly needed to manage already declining regional fisheries. In addition, the workshops hopefully will result in a more precautionary approach to the management of this group, which by definition is at higher risk than other fishes and cannot withstand high fishing pressure. The instructing scientists feel strongly that these workshops are highly beneficial and would like to conduct similar workshops throughout the region.
