First Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Elasmobranch Study (SBEEL), July 1997

The First Meeting of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Estudo de Elasmobranquios took place in Ilheus, State of Bahia, from July 27 to August 2, 1997. The official languages of the meeting were Portuguese, Spanish and English. There were about 70 participants from Brazil and neighbouring countries, including visiting Shark Specialist Group members Dr Samuel Gruber, Dr Jose Castro and Dr Merry Camhi from the USA, Dr Terry Walker from Australia, and Dr Roberto Menni from Argentina. Activities included workshops, panel discussions and contributed papers (oral and posters). Topics covered age determination in sharks, the conservation of elasmobranchs, international cooperation in the study and management of fisheries, behaviour, reproductive migrations, chondrichthyan communities in the south-western Atlantic Ocean, future research priorities, shark attack, and biology and fisheries.
