Earlier this year, the South Australian Fisheries Department circulated A discussion paper which included a proposal for the protection of the great white shark in State waters. Responses to this paper are still being considered. In September, the Australian Seafood Industry Council announced that it had adopted a recomendation to seek an end to targeted fishing for this species in the waters of all Australian states, and would be writing to the states' fisheries management agencies to seek their views on the recommendation. (Targeted fishing is actually only a very limited activity in Australia; far more white sharks are taken as by-catch in fisheries or beach meshing programmes.) This recommendation has been welcomed and supported by the Australian Marine Conservation Society.

We hope to feature an article updating readers on progress with these initiatives in the next issue of Shark News (No. 6).
