Wanted: Basking Shark Tissue Samples
A team at Durham University is developing a DNA library and microsatellite sequences to study the population genetics of basking sharks, compare Atlantic and Pacific populations, localised groups in Europe (Portugal to Norway) and to determine the genetic stock structure of the Atlantic population as a whole. This should provide a sound basis for conservation and management of the species. They have tissue samples from the UK, but would like to hear from anyone who knows areas where basking sharks occur regularly, or could provide tissue samples from anywhere in their global range. They are keen to collaborate with others and would provide full genetic analysis of samples. Please contact Tim Thom, Dept. of Biological Sciences, University of Durham, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE, England. Tel:+44 91 3747404, fax: +44 91 3742417, email: t.j.thom@dur.ac.uk
