CNMI Bans Feeding Of Sharks And Hunting Of Sting Rays
January 7, 2008

Release from: Radio New Zealand

A bill just signed into law by Governor Benigno Fitial bans the fishing of sting rays and feeding of sharks without a permit within the near-shore waters of the Northern Marianas.

The Saipan Tribune reports that the new law was based on findings that the eagle ray population in the CNMI is under threat due to hunting.

The practice was also scaring away divers, thereby making the CNMI a less attractive diving destinations.

Shark feeding became a concern following reports that some tour operators had been feeding sharks in popular swimming areas frequented by children.

The Legislature noted that this practice is dangerous and should be discouraged.

Anyone convicted of violating either prohibition may face six months in prison and or a fine of 1,000 US dollars.
