Qld Govt Urged To Boost Sawfish Protection
September 27, 2006
Release from: ABC News Online
A meeting of regional fish stocking groups in Karumba has decided to press the Queensland Government to declare some types of sawfish as protected species.
Twenty representatives from the north-west and gulf regions have met to examine issues affecting fish re-stocking.
Workshop organiser Marc Van Ryt says Queensland should follow the example of other states and protect endangered species.
"We've become aware that certain species of sawfish for example ... [are] unprotected in Queensland waters and so we want to lobby our peak bodies and our parliamentarians to add them to the regulated fish that need to be protected - the same as they do in the Northern Territory and Western Australia," he said.
