Proposed Smalltooth Sawfish Rules To Be Discussed At Wednesday Hearing
January 13, 2009
Release from: News-Press.com (Florida)
A public hearing to discuss proposed rules to protect the Smalltooth Sawfish, a species that exists in Southwest Florida, especially in Cape Coral canals, will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hampton Inn & Suites at 619 Southeast 47th Terrace.
The National Marine Fisheries Service, which is considering a critical habitat designation for the fish, which will conduct the meeting. The meeting is of concern to marine contractors in the area. Apparently, the government is concerned that removal of seagrass or mangroves for docks, affecting shading, could impact the fish. City dredging operations may also be impacted.
Contractors fear a critical habitat designation could severely limit what can be constructed along canals or other waterways. They are concerned similar regulations could develop that brought moratoriums on dock permits several years ago to protect the manatees.
The marine service had a similar public hearing on the fish in Naples on Jan. 5.
