FIBA/CSRP-Sponsored Training Workshop For West African Scientists Held in Senegal December 2009
A training workshop for West African scientists focusing on
elasmobranch identification, biological sampling, and fishery management was held at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar,
Sénégal on December 7-11, 2009.
The workshop was organized locally by Mika Diop (PSRA,CSRP), and led by three prominent elasmobranch scientists.
George Burgess (Florida Program For Shark Research, University
of Florida, U.S.A.) covered identification of elasmobranch species found off the coast of West Africa.
Enric Cortes (National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S.A.) taught participants about elasmobranch conservation and
fishery management; and Rui Coelho (Florida Program For Shark Research, University
of Florida, U.S.A.) covered shark biology and demonstrated biological sampling and identification techniques.
