Dewatering Pumps
Most Coast Guard boats carry a portable, gasoline-powered drop pump used for dewatering. Dewatering is
done with the pump placed on the disabled boat. The pump can move up to 150 gallons of water per
minute (GPM). However, dewatering may not be carried out on a boat with fuel contamination in
its bilges. The pump can be passed from the boat onto the disabled vessel while still secured
in its watertight container. Operation of the drop pump is detailed in U.S. Coast Guard safety training
materials.
