Founded in 1958, the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) is the definitive compilation of investigations
of all known shark attacks in the world, covering the period from the mid-1500's to date. Information on
individual attacks is gathered from personal interviews of victims and eyewitnesses, official documents, and media
reports. Much of the information is relayed through a network of international scientific cooperators who investigate
attacks in their respective regions and forward their investigative data to the ISAF. The ISAF electronic database
provides valuable information for federal, state, and international governmental agencies, the medical community, and
the inquiring public regarding trends in shark attack and strategies for reducing the risk of being attacked by a shark.
