DAYTONA BEACH SHORES -- A 23-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot by a small shark Sunday -- the second reported shark bite in Volusia County in two days.

Jeff Albright of Port Orange suffered what appeared to be a minor bite on his left foot while surfing near the Sunglow Pier at 9:30 a.m., said Joe Wooden, spokesman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol. Albright saw the shark swim toward him before he was bitten.

"It was a small shark," Wooden said. "Three- to four-foot."

Albright was treated at Halifax Medical Center and released.

On Saturday, an 11-year-old Sanford boy was treated for a minor shark bite in New Smyrna Beach. Each year, warm spring temperatures bring reports of shark bites as schools of baitfish lure the predators -- mostly blacktip sharks -- closer to shore, officials said. Last year, 22 bites were reported in Volusia County, mostly off New Smyrna Beach south of the south jetty. There have been three so far this year.
