NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 11-year-old Sanford boy was bitten on the foot by a shark Saturday while boogie-boarding in the surf, a beach official said.
The boy, whose name was not released, suffered a small bite in his left foot near the Beachway Avenue approach about 1:30 p.m., said Joe Wooden, spokesman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol.
The bite was not considered serious and the boy's parents drove him to a hospital in Sanford, Wooden said.
The bite is the second reported in Volusia County this year, Wooden said. He said the surf is big and the water murky, which might have been a contributing factor.
Last year, 22 bites were reported in Volusia County, mostly by surfers off New Smyrna Beach south of the south jetty. Most were minor; none was fatal.
In the past week south of Volusia, two people have been bitten by sharks in Brevard County, officials said. One involved a 12-year-old boy surfing, and the other a 20-year-old man swimming. Both bites were minor.
