Pact On Galapagos Fishing
QUITO, Ecuador -- Fishermen ended a week-long strike in the Galapagos Islands on Friday after the government of Ecuador, to which the islands belong, agreed to review regulations protecting the archipelago's unique wildlife. The fishermen last week seized Galapagos National Park headquarters and a scientific research station to demand more freedoms, like permission to use longline fishing and sell fins from sharks accidentally caught in the islands. On Friday, Cesar Narvaez, the environment minister, signed a pact with fishermen to form a committee to review the rules. Fishermen have long sought greater freedoms, arguing that they are catching less during the prime lobster and sea cucumber seasons because a population boom in the islands has depleted them.
