National Shark Research Consortium
Pacific Shark Research Center - Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
|
Located in Monterey Bay on the central California Pacific coast, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML)
is a marine science facility operated by a consortium of seven California State Universities.
The Ichthyology Laboratory, under the direction of Gregor M. Cailliet, has been a leading program
in research on the ecology and fisheries biology of sharks and rays since the late 1970's,
resulting in more than 30 scientific publications, including several collaborative studies with the
California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) and the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC)
of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). More recently, scientists at MLML have worked with
colleagues at the Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Shark Research on shark and ray fisheries in the
Gulf of California, Mexico. The primary objectives and public service of projects conducted by Moss
Landing Marine Laboratories' Pacific Shark Research Center are to:
- Conduct and advance basic and applied scientific research on sharks (including rays and chimaeras, collectively called Chondrichthyes).
- Communicate scientific research and news about sharks.
- Provide scientific information on sharks to public policy makers.
- Expand scientific cooperation in national and international issues involving sharks and shark biology.
- Increase public understanding of the biology and importance of sharks.
