International Sawfish Encounter Database Announcement
The Florida Program for Shark Research (FPSR) proudly announces that the International Sawfish Encounter Database is moving from MOTE Marine Laboratory to the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. In order to create a more accurate and updated sawfish database, three additional sawfish databases will be incorporated into an existing database. Under the International Sawfish Encounter Database, all existing information regarding U.S. sawfish, as well as worldwide, will be held in one place. Therefore, the FPSR will be handling all future sawfish encounter reports.
The smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) is a highly endangered species under the ESA (Endangered Species Act). Populations of this species are in decline, thereby making all information about this species invaluable. Sawfish sighting reports are very important for the evaluation of species abundance and habitat range and consequently for the success of the "Smalltooth Sawfish Recovery Plan". Any contribution is of great importance - please contact us to report all sawfish encounters.
Tourists, recreational anglers, commercial fishers, divers, and nature observers, please help us assist the recovery of the U.S. smalltooth sawfish population by reporting your sawfish sightings or captures. Please report your encounters with this species to:
