FLMNH Florida Archaeology Image Permissions Policy

Florida Archaeology maintains a photo archive that consists of field photographs associated with specific projects and/or collections, and imagery of artifacts in the FLMNH collections. These images are available for approved use under the following guidelines and usage fees may apply (see fee structure below).

  1. The image(s) will be used one-time only by the applicant for an agreed upon use.
  2. The image(s) will be credited as being of/from the Florida Museum of Natural History collections/exhibitions. Full credit must appear in immediate proximity to the image(s) or in a list of figures contained within the publication. Typical credit shall read "Courtesy Florida Museum of Natural History."
  3. The Florida Museum of Natural History shall receive, gratis, one copy of all publications in which the image(s) appear. This includes any subsequent editions or additional language editions. Send attention: Florida Archaeology Collections.
  4. No parties shall use the image(s) created in any way, except in the manner described above, without the explicit written permission of the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Fee Structure

  1. For-profit businesses (e.g. publishers) will pay a $150 per image fee for a one-time use, plus any reproduction costs.
  2. Established museums with working budgets (e.g. the Smithsonian, MOSI in Tampa) and out of state schools or universities who need images for a for-profit project (e.g. a book that will be sold, exhibit that they will charge admission to, etc.) will be charged for images. They will pay on a graduated scale for one-time use and will be responsible for any reproduction costs. This way if they need a large number of images they should still be able to afford it.
    • 1-5 images = $50 each
    • 6-10 images = $40 each
    • 11-20 images = $30 each
    • over 20 images = $20 each
  3. Florida schools and universities, any non-profit institutions and other State of Florida governmental offices who need images for educational or research purposes will pay only reproduction costs (if applicable). Examples include the BAR in Tallahassee, the FSU anthropology dept, the FAS, etc.
  4. For substantial orders, out of state schools and universities would fall under number plan 2 above and would be charged. Justification is that since we receive state funding we are obliged to assist schools and universities located in Florida. Out of state institutions would be charged to use our images unless waived by a curator.

Exceptions to the above image fee scheme will be made for researchers working with FLMNH staff or where the appropriate curator has waived fees.

In all cases, the user will be expected to pay any reproduction costs.

FLMNH will retain any original negatives produced during reproduction or new photography of museum specimens.

These charges will only apply to images that are part of the FLMNH collections and are considered museum property (not personal images of FLMNH staff). No FLMNH Staff shall attempt to sell personal images under this policy.
