Electrocytes are arranged in tubes along the ventral portion of the body, in series and in parallel like batteries. Electrocytes differentiate during ontogeny from the fusion of myoblasts located in the hypaxial musculature. Sodium-Potassium pumps in the electrocyte membrane act continually to generate a voltage across the membrane.
