GEOGRAPHIC ELEMENTS

The fields listed in the table below are used to hold upper level geographic data from specimen labels. Country, 1st level subcountry geographic division (State/Prov.), and 2nd level subcountry geographic division (County/Municipality) fields are standardized fields. The parallel verbatim fields are for information as exactly stated on a label. Verbatim fields are used only the the information differs from the standard. Geoflag fields indicate whether information has been added or interpreted by the cataloger. All upper level geographic data is pulled from the text of the label and, generally, is not repeated in the label text field. The only exception is when doing so distorts the reading of the label. E.g., "near Polk/Hernando County border" would still be entered in the label info. field.

Field	Notes
COUNTRY	ISO-3166 Country: see the country file for ISO-3166 standard countries. If a country on the label is not in the standard, find the corresponding current country and enter the verbatim country in the verbatim country field.
GEO1FLAG	Enter * if country not stated on label.
STATE	1st level subcountry division as defined in the country table. E.g., U.S. state, province and department.
GEO2FLAG	Enter * if first level subcountry division is not stated on original label. Enter + if the division is on the label and includes the designation as stated in country table (such as Cartago Province). Leave blank if divisional category name is absent (such as Cartago without "Province").
COUNTY	2nd level subcountry division as defined in the country table. E.g., county, parish, municipality.
GEO3FLAG	Enter * if first level subcountry division is not stated on original label. Enter + if the division is on the label and includes the designation as stated in country table (such as Blanco Municipio). Leave blank if divisional category name is absent (such as Blanco without "Municipio").
LOCNAME	Standardized locality name. This field should only be filled in by the database administrator, unless otherwise instructed. There is currently no gazeteer for this field.
VCOUNTRY	Verbatim country as given on the label, if different from the standard (e.g., Ceylon, while ISO-3166 would be Sri Lanka).
VSTATE	Verbatim 1st level subcountry division as given on the label.
VCOUNTY	Verbatim 2nd level subcountry division as given on the label, if different from the standard.
