Image Acquisition

Sinar Evolution digital back with Sinar CaptureShop creates an ca. 250mb raw file (*.sti). This is stored locally on the Mac Computer.

Image Processing

• Raw files (*.sti) are exported within Sinar CaptureShop to *.tif with no processing. These are stored on [file server]\kentp\imagesincoming.
• Raw file names (*.sti) are proofed against the specimen accession numbers.
• Raw files are copied to a backup hard drive or [file server]\kentp2\sti for temporary storage. These may be deleted once the final images are checked.
• *_nonsecure.tif files are opened in Adobe Photoshop and the sensitive localities are marked out and replaced with "[locality obscured]" (in red). The changed file is saved as *.tif (without the _nonsecure).
• Sets of files are copied from [file server]\kentp\imagesincoming to [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing for processing. This folder has the following subfolders:
  • jpg - store sharpened jpg
  • tn - stores thumbnails (tn_*.jpg)
  • nonsecure - stores files with sensitive localities (*_nonsecure.tif)
  • zoom - stores image folders created by Zoomify.exe
• *.tif files in [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing are processed with MS-Windows batch files
  • main batch file:
    - imageprocesswith_imagemag_onProjects_with_file_copy_bk_withshut.bat
  • calls:
    - imageprocess_lowercase_imagesprocessing_tif.bat
    - zoomcreatebatch_onProjects.bat
    - zoombatch.bat
    - image_process_copy_files_bitkinex.bat
• imageprocesswith_imagemag_onProjects_with_file_copy_bk_withshut.bat does the following:
  • Lower cases all the *.tif file names with imageprocess_lowercase_imagesprocessing_tif.bat
  • Moves the *._nonsecure.tif files to the [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing\nonsecure\ folder.
  • Makes thumbnail files with EZThumbs.exe (EZ Thumbnails), names them tn_*.jpg and stores them in the [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing\tn\ folder.
  • Makes slightly sharpened *.jpg files with Imagemagick and stores them in the [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing\zoom\ folder
  • Zoomcreatebatch_onProjects.bat creates a batch file (zooombatch.bat) for processing the sharpened *.jpg files with Zoomify.
  • Zoombatch.bat runs Zoomify to create the zoomify image folders. Note that this file deletes temporary files that Zoomify creates. If not deleted then they will overwhelm the file system with files of the same name with an added number.
  • Moves the *.jpg files from the [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing\zoom\ folder to the [file server]\kentp\imagesprocessing\jpg\ folder.
  • Calls image_process_copy_files_bitkinex.bat to copy the image zoomify folders to the correct folders on the web server with BitKinex. E.g., \100000a1 is copied to web server \100\100000a1.
• Processed images are moved to \ImagesProcessed[number] folder with image_process_create_fill_Processed_folder.bat
• Kent runs Foxpro script on \ImagesProcessed[number] folder to load the files into our image database.
• Images are checked against the collection database and a two proofsheets are made (e.g., proofsheet33 / proofsheet33 lg thumbnails).
• Images are proofed.
• Images should be backed up on file server and two hard drives.
