Scientific name: Thamnophis sauritus (LINNAEUS 1766)

The following key will separate the three Eastern Ribbonsnakes found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between them based on the characteristics in the key below, you probably can do so using the geographic location alone.

1a Pale blue side stripes; Florida Gulf coast from Withlacoochee River to Wakulla County. Blue–striped Ribbonsnake, Thamnophis sauritus nitae
1b Yellow side stripes. 2
2a Yellow or greenish-orange back stripe; Florida panhandle north to New Hampshire and west to Louisiana and Indiana. Eastern Ribbonsnake, Thamnophis sauritus sauritus
2b Tan back stripe; peninsular Florida to southern South Carolina Peninsula Ribbonsnake, Thamnophis sauritus sackenii
