The following key will separate the two Plainbelly Water Snakes found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between them based on the characteristics in the key below, you probably can do so using the geographic location alone.

1a Belly red, orange or pink; north Florida and southeastern Alabama to Delaware. Redbelly Water Snake, Nerodia erythrogaster erythrogaster
1b Belly ivory to yellow or yellow-orange; western Florida panhandle. Yellowbelly Water Snake, Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster
