The Lepidoptera Collection of the McGuire Center is located on three floors and is housed in compactors with a capacity of 77,000 drawers. When the Center opened in 2004, the collection of the Allyn Museum (then located in Sarasota, Florida) and Lepidoptera holdings of the Florida State Collection of Arthropods formed the nucleus of the new collection, which has since undergone dramatic growth. Although recently collected specimens from surveys conducted by staff and students are being added to the collection, the growth has largely been due to donations of private collections.
