Scientific name: Storeria occipitomaculata .

The following key will separate the two subspecies of redbelly snake that are found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between the subspecies using the characteristics in the key below, you probably can do so using geographic location alone.

1a Light neck spots fuse to form collar; top of head black; central Florida to southern Georgia. Florida redbelly snake,
Storeria occipitomaculata obscura
1b 3 light spots on nape of neck; top of head not black; Florida panhandle to southern Canada. Northern redbelly snake,
Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata
