FAMILY:
A. mississippiensis
C. acutus
G. gangeticus
DICHOTOMOUS KEY |
Head of adult black caiman, showing that much of the dark juvenile colouration is retained into the adult animal - unusual for crocodilians which generally lose their juvenile patterns after only a couple of years (although the brighter yellow cross-banding of the juveniles is absent in adults). Compared with the juvenile head, the adult's is less concave, flatter, and has a more pointed tip. Photograph © Adam Britton
