Australian freshwater crocodile
(Crocodylus johnstoni) performing the "high walk" style of
locomotion. This particular gait (walking style) is unique to the
crocodilians: the entire body except the latter half of the tail is lifted
off the ground, the limbs are positioned directly underneath the body, and
the feet point forwards. As each limb pushes backwards (to move the body
forward) it remains directly underneath the body. Only when the limb moves
forward to return to its original position for the next stride does it
swing out sideways. Front right and rear left, then front left and rear
right limbs move synchronously. |
