And the winner is...
For the 2008 Pic of the Month competition, there were 25 judges who were able to submit a vote: Ian Morris, Lynn Kirkwood, Nick Hayward, Sally Isberg, Jamie Robertson, Yusuke Fukuda, John Brueggen, Kent Vliet, Colin Stevenson, Ruth Elsey, Peter Brazaitis, Gordon Grigg, Bill Ziegler, Chris Dieter, Brady Barr, Boyd Simpson, Nancy Fitzsimmons, Bill Moss, Paul Bodnar, Ralf Sommerlad, Lynne Kelly, David Kirshner, Melissa Kaplan, Erin Britton and Adam Britton. My thanks go to all the judges for their time.
Each judge voted for their top 3 images, which received 3 (1st), 2 (2nd) or 1 (3rd) points. This year there were 9 entries to vote for. When the final total was calculated, the top three were ranked as follows:
1st - Garry Lindner - Flat Dog Resting (41 points)
2nd - Nikhil Whitaker
Out of the Frying Pan (31 points)

The winner of the best Pic of the Month submitted in 2007 was Garry Lindner with, ironically, the only picture submitted that didn't actually feature a crocodile! That does not detract from what is a truly fascinating picture, and most judges were intrigued with exactly how this almost perfect imprint was left in the sand. That Garry found and photographed the print was highly fortunate, because only a few hours later it had completely vanished again - swallowed by the tide. The race for runner up was neck and neck, but finally Nikhil Whitaker seized 2nd place with his excellent portrait of a hatching Indian Gharial, made all the more poignant by the critically endangered status of this species, especially in light of the death of over half of the remaining breeding population in the wild in late 2007. In 3rd place, pipped at the post, we have another fascinating behaviour shot from Buck Salau in Kakadu National Park, telling us far more about the behaviour of crocodiles than any other picture submitted in 2007.
I would offer Garry an A4 Ilfochrome print as a prize, but I suspect he'd prefer the alternative - a slab of Bundy and Coke! The runners up will get an authentic NT postcard!
Thanks again to everyone who sent photographs during 2007, whether they made the Pic of the Month or not. The standard of entries was excellent as always. I'd like to thank everyone again for supporting the website, and I'll see you here next year.
