This bibliography is based on a review of original papers, theses and dissertations, and does not include "gray literature" often referenced in sea turtle biological studies. Although many abstracts are included in the bibliography, abstracts from the Annual Symposia on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation are not included. Virtually every citation has been checked to ensure accurate and comprehensive coverage of the literature on the biology of Caretta caretta and on fossils referred to Caretta or Thalassochelys. I have noted in preparing this bibliography that many references, particularly old and obscure references or those not published in English, have been cited incorrectly by subsequent authors. Always double check references! The bibliography is current to June 2007.
Preparation of this bibliography would not have been possible without the assistance of the following persons who provided citations or copies of references: Ray Ashton, Mehmet K. Atatur, Ernst Baard, George Balazs, Karen Bjorndal, Richard Byles, Dieter Gramentz, Brendan Godley, Carol Hahn, Terry Henwood, Kazuo Horikoshi, George Hughes, Luc Laurent, Molly Lutcavage, Larry Ogren, David Owens, Peter Pritchard, J. Perran Ross, Katsufumi Sato, Hobart M. Smith, Lily Venizelos, Myrna Watanabe, James D. Williams, Blair Witherington, Jeanette Wyneken and George Zug. I especially thank Lindy Johnson, Karen Bjorndal and Alan Bolten for allowing access to the library at the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, University of Florida, and Kay Lindgren, librarian formerly with the National Biological Service in Ft. Collins, Colorado, for her untiring efforts to track down obscure and often incorrectly cited papers.
Preparation of the original bibliography (Dodd, 1987) was made possible by a grant from the Endangered Species Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Albuquerque, New Mexico. I thank Jack Woody for his encouragement and his efforts to obtain funds.
This bibliography is made available by the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, as an aid to the study and conservation of the loggerhead sea turtle throughout the world. I especially thank Wayne King and the Herpetology section of the FLMNH for hosting the bibliography and for posting periodic updates. I (and they) would appreciate an acknowledgment when the bibliography is used.
Further, I would appreciate receiving copies of papers not on the bibliography or of papers incorrectly cited (there are still a few I have been unable to track down!). However, because of the volume of potential inquiries, I will be unable to supply copies of papers to all interested parties.
