Scientific name: Nerodia erythrogaster .

The following key will separate the two subspecies of plainbelly watersnake that are found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between the two from the color differences in the key below, you can probably identify the subspecies by geographic location.

1a Belly red, orange or pink; north Florida and southeastern Alabama to Delaware. Redbelly watersnake,
Nerodia erythrogaster erythrogaster
1b Belly ivory to yellow or yellow-orange; western Florida panhandle. Yellowbelly watersnake,
Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster
