Scientific name: Thamnophis sauritus .


The following key will separate the three subspecies of ribbon snake that are found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between the surbspecies using the characteristics in the key below, you probably can do so using geographic location alone.

1a Pale blue side stripes; Florida Gulf coast from Withlacoochee River to Wakulla County. Bluestriped ribbon snake,
Thamnophis sauritus nitae
1b Yellow side stripes. 2
2a Yellow or greenish-orange back stripe; Florida panhandle north to New Hampshire and west to Louisiana and Indiana. Eastern ribbon snake,
Thamnophis sauritus sauritus
2b Tan back stripe; peninsular Florida.to southern South Carolina Peninsula ribbon snake,
Thamnophis sauritus sackenii
