The following key will separate the two subspecies of kingsnake that are found in Florida. If you are unable to distinguish between the subspecies using the characteristics in the key below, you should be able to do so using the geographic location alone.

1a 32 or fewer yellow crossbands on the back; peninsula Florida from Alachua County north. Eastern kingsnake,

1b 40 or more light-colored crossbands on the back; peninsula Florida south from Volusia County on the east coast and Pinellas County on the west coast. Florida kingsnake,
