Emydura Bonaparte 1836, Chelon. Tab. Analyt. :7.
TYPE SPECIES: Emys macquaria Cuvier 1829 (nomen nudum) (=Chelys (Hydraspis) macquarrii Gray 1831), by monotypy.
DISTRIBUTION: Australia and New Guinea.
COMMENT: Cogger, Cameron, and Cogger 1983, Zool. Cat. Australia Amph. Rept. 1:62, suggested that Emydura is a nomen nudum, but should be retained by reason of long and general usage. Wells and Wellington 1983, Australian J. Herpet. 1(3-4):74, attempted to resurrect Chelymys Gray 1844 to replace Emydura. However, Stimson 1986, J. Herpet. 20(2):279-280, showed conclusively that Emydura Bonaparte 1836 was available and not a nomen nudum. With no description and an inadequate diagnosis, Wells and Wellington 1985, Australian J. Herpet., Suppl. Ser. 1:13-14, separated a number of species into the genus Tropicochelymys -- see comments in individual species accounts.

Emydura macquarrii (Gray 1831), Synops. Rept. Cataphracta 1:40.
ORIGINAL NAME: Hydraspis macquarrii.
TYPE: Holotype: MNHN 9409.
TYPE LOCALITY: Australia; subsequently restricted to "Nova Hollandia, Macquarrie River," by Gray 1831, Synops. Rept. Cataphracta 1:40.
DISTRIBUTION: Murray Darling river systems and associated drainages west of the Great Dividing Range in southeastern Australia.
COMMENT: Reviewed by Cogger, Cameron, and Cogger 1983, Zool. Cat. Australia Amph. Rept. 1:63, who credit the original description to Gray 1830 [1831], In: Griffith and Pidgeon, Anim. Kingd. Cuvier 9:1-110. However, Gray 1855, Cat. Shield Rept. British Mus. 1:57, cites "Gray, Syn. 40," a clear reference to Gray 1831, Synops. Rept. Cataphracta 1:40. Gray 1855, Cat. Shield Rept. British Mus. 1:57, listed Hydraspis [=Chelymys] australis Gray 1841, In: Grey, J. Exped. Discov. N. W. Austral. 2:445, as a variety of Chelymys macquaria, then Gray 1872, Proc. Zool. Soc. London :504, corrected the type locality given in his original description of australis to the Macquarie River, New South Wales, and stated he was inclined to believe Chelymys [=Emydura] australis was a synonym of Chelymys [=Emydura] macquarrii. Apparently, since they have the same type localities, Cogger, Cameron, and Cogger 1983, Zool. Cat. Australia Amph. Rept. 1:63, listed Emydura australis as a synonym of Emydura macquarrii. Correct though that action may be, it leaves unresolved the correct name of the northeastern Western Australia and northwestern Northern Territory populations formerly assigned to this taxon. According to McDowell 1983, In: Rhodin and Miyata, Adv. Herpet. Evol. Biol. :169-189, synonymy includes Chelymys krefftii Gray 1871, and Euchelymys subglobosa Krefft 1876. See also Mertens 1969, Senckenb. Biol. 50:32-36. With no descriptions and inadequate diagnoses, Wells and Wellington 1985, Australian J. Herpet., Suppl. Ser. 1:12, erect the names Chelymys cooki for the Macleay River, New South Wales, population, Chelymys joncanni for the Hunter River system, New South Wales, population, and Chelymys windorah for the Cooper Creek, Strzelecki Creek, Queensland, populations of this turtle.
