APPENDIX III: INDEX OF GEOGRAPHIC ALPHA-2 CODES

Use of the 2-letter codes is not a statement of opinion concerning the legal status of any nation, its authorities, territory, or delimitation of its frontiers. Separate 2-letter codes are used for some dependencies or geographic areas solely because particular turtles and/or crocodilians occur there and not in the rest of the governing nation. For this very reason, several additions were made to the ISO codes for use in this list, for example, NV, and PI.

The codes are of special use to wildlife inspectors and customs agents charged with enforcing Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora restrictions on commercial wildlife importations. Only nations within the geographic range of the species indicated by the codes can issue `country-of-origin' export permits. Unless the species was bred in captivity, nations outside the range can only issue `re-export' permits for shipments that move through their jurisdictions.
