Florida Museum of Natural History

From January through June 7, 2000, 27 shorebird species, along with numerous other water birds, were recorded on the receding lakeshore beaches at Newnan's Lake in Alachua County. Included among these records were several species (Wilson's Plover, Ruff, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Black-headed Gull) recorded for the first time in the county. In all the previous 114 years of birding in the county, only 23 species of shorebird had been recorded (fide Rex Rowan).
