Placing Pottery
 

At left, Darcie MacMahon carefully places a pottery vessel in a display case. These Panhandle pots date from 500 to 1,000 years ago, a period archaeologists call Fort Walton.

Painting Mural
 

Fort Walton leaders expressed their power by building large earthen mounds and by displaying rare and valuable wares obtained in ceremonial exchanges with other leaders. At left, Russell Bethea paints a mural depicting such a trade.

Creating Platform
 

After the mural was completed, a raised platform was built out of styrofoam. At left, Russell Bethea coats the platform with concrete.
