Summary

McAfee VirusScan is required on every museum computer. It is critical that it is updated on a daily basis to prevent the spread of viruses and the infection of your machine. Please follow the instructions below to confirm that your virus protection is being updated on a regular basis.

The University license agreement with McAfee allows any student, staff or faculty member to install VirusScan on their home computer. You can visit the UF Software site to download the program for your home use:

Confirming Your Scanner Is Up-To-Date

There should be a red and blue McAfee shield icon on the right-hand side of your taskbar. Right-click on it. If you are using VirusScan 4.5.1, you will want to click "About." If you are using VirusScan Enterprise 7.0, you will want to choose "About VirusScan Enterprise." (Note: If you do not have this icon in your system tray, your VirusScan is not installed or not running and you should notify OMT with a Helpdesk Request immediately.)

This will tell you the version of McAfee you have and when the virus files were last updated. See below:

IMPORTANT! If the date listed there is not within 1-2 weeks of today's date, try a Manual Update to see if you need a new DAT file. If you suspect your computer is not updating on its own, please submit a Helpdesk Request on the museum Intranet to make sure your virus protection is scheduled to update on a regular basis!

Manually Updating Your Virus Definitions

Your virus protection should be set by OMT to update itself. However, if there is a need for you to force an update manually, there are different methods for the two versions running at the museum. To identify which version you are running, please follow the directions above and you will be able to see the version listed at the top of the windows as shown in the two previous images.

VirusScan 4.5.1

Double-click (not right-click!) on the magnifying glass icon in your system tray, or choose Start -> Programs -> Network Associates -> VirusScan Console.

Magnifying Glass Icon

You will see the following screen. Make sure "AutoUpdate" is highlighted (not AutoUpgrade!) and then click on the "Start" button.

AutoUpdate

VirusScan will then try to update the files and you will see the box below. It will either install the new DAT files, or it will let you know if you are current.

VirusScan Enterprise 7.0

Go to Start -> Programs -> Network Associates -> VirusScan Console. You will see the following screen. Make sure "AutoUpdate" is highlighted, then click on the "Start" button.
