Maintaining Your Windows Computer

This is part of the "10 Easy Steps to Keep Your Computer Safe, Clean and Healthy" presentation created by Matthew McDonell and Olusegun Yayi.

For Windows 2000 and XP

  1. Left click on the "Start" button.
  2. Select "Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
  3. Select the Drive that you run cleanup on. Most of the time you will select the C: Drive
  4. This will start calculating space that can obtained.
  5. Put a check mark next to each box you want to select. I select all files except Office set-up files. These files can be useful when you are updating office.
  6. Select "OK" at the bottom.
  7. Select "Yes" to start deleting files.
  8. Close the program by left clicking "Ok" at the bottom, after Disk Cleanup finishes deleting files.

Please make sure that your version of windows if up to date. This should be set to automatically happen. Check to see how your computer is set up.

If your computer is running Windows 2000, start the Automatic Updates Tool through Start > Control Panel.

If your computer is running Windows XP, right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.

You can also run updates manually by going to the website below: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

I suggest running a couple of programs that will search for adware, shareware, spyware and annoying pop-ups. These programs can be downloaded for FREE at www.downloads.com: Ad-aware and SpyBot - Search and Destroy

Both will find different problems. Please make sure that you search for updates before you run the program. These programs should be run during maintenance.

Make sure that your virus protection software is up-to-date and run a scan on your system. If you are in need of virus protections software and do not want to pay for it I would download a free version called AVG you can download it here: http://free.grisoft.com/

After you have completed this you will need to run Disk Defragmenter. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
